Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order
Chapter 2 Articles 15, 16, and 17

Article 15: Let them individually and collectively be in the forefront in promoting justice by the testimony of their human lives and their courageous initiatives. Especially in the field of public life, they should make definite choices in harmony with their faith.²⁶

Article 16: Let them esteem work both as a gift and as a sharing in the creation, redemption, and service of the human community.²⁷

Article 17: In their family they should cultivate the Franciscan spirit of peace, fidelity, and respect for life, striving to make of it a sign of a world already renewed in Christ. ²⁸

By living the grace of matrimony, husbands and wives in particular should bear witness in the world to the love of Christ for his Church. They should joyfully accompany their children on their human and spiritual journey by providing a simple and open Christian education and being attentive to the vocation of each child.²⁹

Commentary

Article 15: The second grouping (15–19) of the ways Secular Franciscans spread the gospel and witness to Jesus Christ deals with concrete action. Not only does gospel living take place in a special lifestyle, but it also expresses itself in a specific mode of apostolic activity or ministry.

The first particular aspect of the Secular Franciscans’ evangelical action is social justice (15), both on the individual level and on the level of community participation. They must show justice themselves and motivate justice in others, not just in their private lives but also in the public forum of politics, business, economics, and the like. This mandate for advancing social justice as an organized group overturns previous prohibitions against a public common expression of rights when it is carried out as a means of demonstrating the convictions of faith.

 

Article 16: Another concrete means of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ is expressed in attitudes toward work (16). Through working, the Secular Franciscans discover their workaday world as the arena of their salvation and at the same time exemplify the saving Christ to others. So, human labor is a blessing, both received and bestowed. By working, a person shares in the creative power of the Father, renews the face of the earth along with the Son, and brings the love of the Holy Spirit to the human community. Such an attitude toward work can reshape one’s own and others’ values and actions regarding labor and management, business and economics, living wages and welfare, proper use of one’s own talents, and the resources of others.

Article 17: A third apostolic expression of gospel living concerns family life (17). The family is the God-given basic unit of human society and a miniature of the total world already redeemed by Christ. Hence, Franciscan-oriented families present a renewed world of love and dignity, are an example of Christ’s love for his Church, and reflect the light of Christ in affront to the darkness of today’s shattered families and prevailing godless values. Husbands and wives, then, have a special ministry in the Church to the world. This ministry is exercised in two ways: by leading and educating their children to experience Christ and by witnessing to others that God is present in the family. This Christian family living is one of the most particular expressions of the laity’s life and mission in the Church.

Artículo 15: Estén presentes con el testimonio de su vida y también con iniciativas eficaces, tanto individuales como comunitarias, en la promoción de la justicia, particularmente en el ámbito de la vida pública, empeñándose en opciones concretas y coherentes con su fe.²⁶

 

Artículo 16: Consideren el trabajo como don de Dios y como participación en la creación, redención y servicio de la comunidad humana.²⁷

 

Artículo 17: Vivan en la propia familia el espíritu franciscano de paz, fidelidad y respeto a la vida, esforzándose en convertirlo en el signo de un mundo ya renovado en Cristo²⁸.

Los casados, particularmente, viviendo la gracia del matrimonio, den testimonio en el mundo del amor de Cristo a su Iglesia. Con una educación cristiana, sencilla y abierta, atentos a la vocación de cada uno, recorran gozosamente con sus hijos su itinerario espiritual y humano²⁹.

 

Comentario

 

Artículo 15: El segundo grupo (15–19) de las formas en que los franciscanos seglares difunden el evangelio y dan testimonio de Jesucristo se relaciona con la acción concreta. La vivencia del evangelio no solo tiene lugar en un estilo de vida especial, sino que también se expresa en un modo específico de actividad o ministerio apostólico.

 

El primer aspecto particular de la acción evangélica de los franciscanos seglares es la justicia social (15), tanto a nivel individual como a nivel de participación comunitaria. Deben mostrar justicia ellos mismos y motivar la justicia en los demás, no solo en sus vidas privadas sino también en el foro público de la política, los negocios, la economía y similares. Este mandato de promover la justicia social como grupo organizado anula las prohibiciones anteriores contra la expresión pública común de los derechos cuando se lleva a cabo como un medio para demostrar las convicciones de la fe.

 

Artículo 16: Otro medio concreto de anuncio de la Buena Noticia de Jesucristo se expresa en las actitudes hacia el trabajo (16). A través del trabajo, los franciscanos seglares descubren su mundo laboral cotidiano como escenario de su salvación y al mismo tiempo ejemplifican a Cristo salvador para los demás. Entonces, el trabajo humano es una bendición, tanto recibida como otorgada. Al trabajar, la persona participa de la fuerza creadora del Padre, renueva la faz de la tierra junto con el Hijo y lleva el amor del Espíritu Santo a la comunidad humana. Tal actitud hacia el trabajo puede remodelar los valores y acciones propios y de los demás con respecto al trabajador y la gestión, los negocios y la economía, los salarios dignos y el bienestar, el uso adecuado de los propios talentos y los recursos de los demás.

 

Artículo 17: Una tercera expresión apostólica de vivir el evangelio se refiere a la vida familiar (17). La familia es la unidad básica dada por Dios a la sociedad humana y una miniatura del mundo total ya redimido por Cristo. Por lo tanto, las familias de orientación franciscana presentan un mundo renovado de amor y dignidad, son un ejemplo del amor de Cristo por su Iglesia y reflejan la luz de Cristo frente a la oscuridad de las familias destrozadas de hoy y los valores impíos que prevalecen. Esposos y esposas, entonces, tienen en la Iglesia un ministerio especial al mundo. Este ministerio se ejerce de dos maneras: guiando y educando a sus hijos para que experimenten a Cristo y dando testimonio a los demás de que Dios está presente en la familia. Esta vida familiar cristiana es una de las expresiones más particulares de la vida y misión de los laicos en la Iglesia.

Chapter 2 Articles 12, 13, and 14

Article 12: Witnessing to the good yet to come and obliged to acquire purity of heart because of the vocation they have embraced, they should set themselves free to love God and their brothers and sisters.²¹

Article 13: As the Father sees in every person the features of his Son, the firstborn of many brothers and sisters,²² so the Secular Franciscans with a gentle and courteous spirit accept all people as a gift of the Lord and an image of Christ.²³

A sense of community will make them joyful and ready to place themselves on an equal basis with all people, especially with the lowly for whom they shall strive to create conditions of life worthy of people redeemed by Christ.²⁴

Article 14: Secular Franciscans, together with all people of good will, are called to build a more fraternal and evangelical world so that the kingdom of God may be brought about more effectively. Mindful that anyone “who follows Christ, the perfect man, becomes more of a man himself,” let them exercise their responsibilities competently in the Christian spirit of service.²⁵

Commentary

Article 12: The result of simple living in gospel poverty is freedom to seek and share the great treasure of the kingdom: loving God and neighbor (12).

 

Article 13: Hand in hand with simple living is coming to recognize that in Christ all are equally brothers and sisters (13). There is no room for prejudice or exclusiveness in the Franciscan way of life. In fact, the sense of community and the will toward community compel the Secular Franciscans to discover Christ in everyone, especially the lowly and poor and disadvantaged.

 

Article 14: The natural consequence to simple living and a sense of community is selfless service (14). Secular Franciscans expend themselves by using their special talents, competence, and responsibility. Thus, they bring to others the experience of God and the hope for achieving their full humanity.

Capítulo 2 Artículos 12-14

 

Artículo 12: Testigos de los bienes futuros y comprometidos con la vocación abrazada a la adquisición de la pureza de corazón, se harán libres para el amor de Dios y de los hermanos²¹.

 

Artículo 13: De la misma manera que el Padre ve en cada uno de los hombres los rasgos de su Hijo, Primogénito de muchos hermanos²², los Franciscanos seglares acojan a todos los hombres con ánimo humilde y cortés, como don del Señor²³ e imagen de Cristo. El sentido de fraternidad les hará felices de colocarse a la par de todos los hombres, especialmente con los más humildes, para los cuales se esforzarán en crear condiciones de vida dignas de criaturas redimidas por Cristo²⁴.

 

Artículo 14: Llamados, juntamente con todos los hombres de buena voluntad, a construir un mundo más fraterno y evangélico para la edificación del reino de Dios, conscientes de que “quien sigue a Cristo, Hombre perfecto, se hace a sí mismo más hombre,” cumplan con competencia las propias responsabilidades con espíritu cristiano de servicio.25

 

Comentario

 

Artículo 12: El resultado de una vida sencilla en la pobreza evangélica es la libertad para buscar y compartir el gran tesoro del reino: amar a Dios y al prójimo (12).

 

Artículo 13: De la mano con la vida sencilla se llega a reconocer que en Cristo todos son igualmente hermanos y hermanas (13). No hay lugar para prejuicios o exclusividades en el estilo de vida franciscano. De hecho, el sentido de comunidad y la voluntad de comunidad impulsan a los franciscanos seglares a descubrir a Cristo en todos, especialmente en los humildes, los pobres y los desfavorecidos.

 

Artículo 14: La consecuencia natural de una vida sencilla y un sentido de comunidad es el servicio desinteresado (14). Los franciscanos seglares se dedican usando sus talentos especiales, competencia y responsabilidad. Así, llevan a los demás la experiencia de Dios y la esperanza de alcanzar su plena humanidad.
