TRUE AND PERFECT JOY
One day at Saint Mary [of the Angels] blessed Francis called Brother Leo and said: “Brother Leo, write.” 2He responded: “Look, I’m ready!” 3“Write,” he said, “what true joy is.”
4“A messenger arrives and says that all the Masters of Paris have entered the Order. Write: this isn’t true joy! 5Or, that all the prelates, archbishops and bishops beyond the mountains, as well as the King of France and the King of England [have entered the Order]. Write: this isn’t true joy!
6Again, that my brothers have gone to the non-believers and converted all of them to the faith; again, that I have so much grace from God that I heal the sick and perform many miracles. I tell you true joy doesn’t consist in any of these things.”
7“Then what is true joy?”
8“I return from Perugia and arrive here in the dead of night. It’s winter time, muddy, and so cold that icicles have formed on the edges of my habit and keep striking my legs and blood flows from such wounds. 9Freezing, covered with mud and ice, I come to the gate and, after I’ve knocked and called for some time, a brother comes and asks: ‘Who are you?’ ‘Brother Francis,’ I answer. 10‘Go away!’ he says. ‘This is not a decent hour to be wandering about! You may not come in!’ 11When I insist, he replies: ‘Go away! You are simple and stupid! Don’t come back to us again! There are many of us here like you—we don’t need you!’
12I stand again at the door and say: ‘For the love of God, take me in tonight!” 13And he replies: ‘I will not! 14Go to the Crosiers’ place and ask there!’ 15“I tell you this: If I had patience and did not become upset, true joy, as well as true virtue and the salvation of my soul, would consist in this.”

Secular Franciscans are Subtle Evangelizers (Part 2)
When we are professed, Secular Franciscans deepen our baptismal commitment. We are called to be in the forefront of evangelization. We may not be knocking on doors or preaching sermons, but if we live our Rule authentically, we are evangelizing, nonetheless. We are SUBTLE EVANGELIZERS.
The questions following each article can be used for discussion with a small group, with a prayer partner, or answered in your journal
Article 12 “…set themselves free to love God and their brothers and sisters…”
+What attachments prevent us from keeping our relationship with God and others strong and healthy?
Article 13 “…so the Secular Franciscans with a gentle and courteous spirit accept all people as a gift of the Lord and an image of Christ.” 23
+Think about how our relationships…family, fraternity, colleagues, friends, those who encounter us online…affect our mission as evangelizers. Give examples: helpful/unhelpful
Article 14 “…are called to build a more fraternal and evangelical world….”

Through our baptism, all Christians are called to be “priests, prophets, and kings.” We are called to proclaim the gospel every day of our lives. In a recent homily, a local pastor spoke about prophets as being the “mouthpieces” of God. As prophets we are to hear God’s word and spread the Gospel.
When we are professed, Secular Franciscans deepen our baptismal commitment. We are called to be in the forefront of evangelization. We may not be knocking on doors or preaching sermons, but if we live our Rule authentically, we are evangelizing, nonetheless. We are SUBTLE, DISCREET EVANGELIZERS.
After reading the call to conversion in the Prologue to our Rule, take a good look at the snippets of key articles of our Rule below. The Rule helps us to reorder our lives so that we become effective evangelizers.
The questions following each article can be used for discussion with a small group, with a prayer partner, or answered in your journal.
Article 2 ” By their profession they pledge themselves to live the gospel in the manner of St. Francis by means of this rule approved by the Church.”5
+How often do you read our Rule? When making decisions, does your mind ever go to the Rule for assistance?
+Give an example of how you can make the Rule part of your prayer life.Article 4 Secular Franciscans should devote themselves especially to careful reading of the gospel, going from gospel to life and life to the gospel8.”
+How often do you read Scripture besides what you hear at Mass?
+Give some examples of how you go from gospel to life and life to the gospel.
Article 5 “…should seek to encounter the living and active person of Christ in their brothers and sisters, in Sacred Scripture, in the Church, and in liturgical activity.”

+ The sixteenth century Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels envelops the tiny chapel known as the Porziuncola.
+ This chapel was one of the churches restored by St. Francis.
+ This is the spot where, while listening to the Gospel, Francis understood what he was called by God to do.
+ Here he founded the Order in 1209.
+ St. Clare received her religious habit from the hands of Francis here in 1211.
+ In 1216 as Francis prayed that everyone could be brought to heaven, he obtained from Jesus in a vision the PARDON OF ASSISI—a plenary indulgence, which was later ratified by Pope Honorius III.
+ This is where the friars’ early general chapters were held—the Chapter of Mats of 1221 was attended by 5,000 friars.
+ Here, on October 3, 1226, St. Francis welcomed Sister Death lying naked on the ground just outside the chapel.
“See to it, my sons, that you never abandon this place. If you are driven out from one side, go back in at the other. For this place is truly holy and is the dwelling place of God. Here, when we were but a few, the Most High gave us increase; here he enlightened the hearts of his poor ones by the light of his wisdom; here he set our wills on afire with the flame of his love. Here he who prays with a devout heart will obtain what he prays for and he who offends will be punished more severely. Wherefore, my sons, consider this dwelling place of God to be worthy of all honour, and with all your, with voice of joy, and praise, give glory to the Lord in this place.” (Words of the dying St. Francis, Celano 1, n. 106)
The Conditions for Receiving the Pardon
+ Each year from vespers on August 1 through August 2 (Feast of Our Lady of the Angels) you should visit either a Franciscan church or your own church. (At first the indulgence was only given for the Porziuncola, but it has been widened over the years.)
+ You may obtain the indulgence any day of the year upon visiting the Porziuncola itself.
CONDITIONS TO OBTAIN THE PARDON OF ASSISI
Plenary Indulgence–(for oneself or for a departed soul)
- Sacramental Confession to be in God’s sanctifying grace *(to be received within eight days before or after initiate “appeal” for the Plenary Indulgence);
- *Participation in the Holy Mass with reception of the Holy Eucharist.
- Visit to a Catholic Church, followed by the Profession of FAITH (Nicene Creed or Apostles Creed),
- Recite the OUR FATHER, in order to reaffirm and give witness to one’s Christian dignity, as a child of God, that one received in Baptism;
- Pray for the Pope’s intentions: as Vicar of Christ, Shepherd of the Universal Church, and visible sign of unity among the Faithful

+ Read Matthew 10: 9-15. This is the gospel that Francis heard read at the Porziuncola. Reflect on its meaning to all Franciscans and to us as Secular Franciscans.

+ While you are there, spend time with the Blessed Sacrament. Consider your vocation and what God is asking of you.

What Makes Secular Franciscans Different from Other Catholics? (Part Five)
This week we look at Our Relationship to our Founder
Our knowledge of and relationship to our founder is an important part of our lives as Franciscans. We trace the founding of our Order to one of the greatest of the Church’s saints who sets the example for us. As a matter of fact, at our profession we promise to live the gospel by following in the footsteps of St. Francis. (See Rite of Profession quoted in week #1.) We are blessed to have writings by St. Francis to rely on to ensure that we remain faithful to the Franciscan charism. Reading his prayers and letters gives us years of material for meditation and imitation and makes clear the path we are to follow.
There are some 30 writings known to have been composed by St. Francis or which have been reliably attributed to him. These constitute a real treasure for Franciscans. By comparison, only four writings by Francis’s contemporary St. Dominic, founder of the Dominicans, survive. The writings of St. Francis offer Secular Franciscans an opportunity to encounter him personally. They let St. Francis speak for himself.
Over the course of one’s life as a Secular Franciscan, there is time to read everything written by St. Francis, but to begin, consider the five documents listed below. Each of these, along with a brief and informative introduction, can be accessed in the three-volume set Early Documents or at the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition website, https://franciscantradition.org/ .
The Prayer Before the Crucifix — This simple and short prayer for conversion is Francis’s plea for God’s mercy to “enlighten the darkness” of his heart and to give him the spiritual gifts necessary to obey God’s command.
FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 40The Earlier Exhortation (The first version of the Letter to the Faithful) serves as the Prologue to the Secular Franciscan Rule of 1978. Addressed to the Brothers and Sisters of Penance, it offers a form of life Francis intended for the lay penitents associated with his movement. Earlier Exhortation: FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 41
A Letter to a Minister reveals how important mercy and minority were to Francis and presents his own idea of servant leadership. FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 97
The Admonitions are a collection of undated writings by St. Francis that are a window on how Francis understood the gospel life and how he viewed life in fraternity. FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 128
A Letter to Brother Leo presents Francis as an intimate and caring brother. There is no way of knowing the circumstances Francis refers to—specifically, a conversation between him and Leo along the road—but there is no mistaking Francis’s love and compassion. FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 122
The Canticle of Brother Sun is Francis’s great poem of praise to God through his creatures. It makes explicit the connection between Francis and nature (kinship with creation) and establishes Francis as a poet and troubadour of God.
CA:ED, p. 391An irony of our time is that the writing most associated with St. Francis is one he never wrote: the “Prayer of St. Francis,” also called the “Peace Prayer” (“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…”) likely originated in France around 1912, first appearing in a spiritual magazine published in Paris. Although devout, these words were never uttered by Francis and should not eclipse his authentic prayers. Similarly, many sayings attributed to Francis (e.g., “Preach the gospel; if necessary, use words.”) are not found in the documents. The authoritative sources will yield a trove of inspiring quotations more trustworthy and meaningful than those erroneously attributed to him on internet pages and elsewhere.
Along with being thoroughly familiar with our Rule of Life and with the Gospels, we should also know about and internalize the life and writings of St. Francis. In this way, the Franciscan charism becomes firmly implanted in our minds and hearts, and we are more easily able to live out our vocation as Secular Franciscans.

Nuestro conocimiento y relación con nuestro fundador es una parte importante de nuestras vidas como franciscanos. Remontamos la fundación de nuestra Orden a uno de los más grandes santos de la Iglesia que nos da el ejemplo. De hecho, en nuestra profesión prometemos vivir el evangelio siguiendo los pasos de San Francisco. (Ver Rito de Profesión citado en la semana #1.) Tenemos la bendición de tener escritos de San Francisco en los que confiar para asegurarnos de permanecer fieles al carisma franciscano.
