Those Who Do Not Do Penance
All those men and women who are not living in penance, who do not receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, who practice vice and sin and walk after the evil concupiscence and the evil desires of their flesh, who do not observe what they have promised to the Lord, and who in their body serve the world through the desires of the flesh, the concerns of the world and the cares of this life: They are held captive by the devil, whose children they are, and whose works they do (Jn 8:41). They are blind because they do not see the true light, our Lord Jesus Christ. They do not possess spiritual wisdom because they do not have the Son of God, the true wisdom of the Father. It is said of them: Their wisdom has been swallowed up (Ps 107[106]:27) and Cursed are those who turn away from your commands (Ps 119[118]:21). They see and acknowledge, know and do evil, and knowingly lose their souls.
See, you blind ones, deceived by your enemies: the flesh, the world, and the devil, because it is sweet for the body to sin and it is bitter to serve God, 12 for every vice and sin flow and proceed from the human heart (Mt 15:19, Mk 7:21) as the Lord says in the gospel. And you have nothing in this world or in that to come. And you think you will possess this world’s vanities for a long time, but you are deceived because a day and hour will come of which you give no thought, which you do not know, and of which you are unaware when the body becomes weak, death approaches, and it dies a bitter death. And no matter where, when, or how a person dies in the guilt of sin without penance and satisfaction, if he can perform an act of satisfaction and does not do so, the devil snatches his soul from its body with such anguish and distress that no one can know [what it is like] except the one receiving it.
And every talent, ability, knowledge and wisdom (2 Chr 1:12) they think they have will be taken away from them (Lk 8:18, Mk 4:25). And they leave their wealth to their relatives and friends who take and divide it and afterward say: “May his soul be cursed because he could have given us more and acquired more than what he distributed to us.” Worms eat his body and so body and soul perish in this brief world and they will go to hell where they will be tortured forever.
In the love which is God (1 Jn 4:16) we beg all those whom these words reach to receive those fragrant words of our Lord Jesus Christ written above with divine love and kindness. And let whoever does not know how to read have them read to them frequently. Because they are spirit and life (Jn 6:63), they should preserve them together with a holy activity until the end.
And whoever has not done these things will be held accountable before the tribunal of our Lord Jesus Christ on the day of judgment (Rom 14:10, Mt 12:36).
COMMENTARY
Secondly, the person who refuses this grace lacks wisdom and light, loses one’s perspective in striving for perfect joy, and finds oneself enslaved and smothered by the demonic influences of life. Hence, no happiness in this world or the next. Francis’ words are stark, straightforward, and uncompromising, but the core message is valid and ever-true.

Prólogo 2 Los que no hacen penitencia
Por el contrario, todos aquellos y aquellas que no viven en penitencia, ni reciben el cuerpo y la sangre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, y viven en el vicio y el pecado, y van tras la mala concupiscencia (cf. Col 3,5) y los malos deseos de su carne (cf. Gál 5,16), y no cumplen lo que prometieron al Señor, y sirven corporalmente al mundo con los deseos carnales (1Pe 2,11) y con los afanes de este mundo (cf. Mt 13,22; Lc 21,34) y las preocupaciones de esta vida, engañados por el diablo, cuyos hijos son y cuyas obras hacen (cf. Jn 8,41), son unos ciegos (cf. Mt 15,14), pues no ven al que es la luz verdadera (cf. Jn 1,9), nuestro Señor Jesucristo. No tienen sabiduría espiritual, porque no tienen al Hijo de Dios, que es la verdadera sabiduría del Padre. De ellos se dice: Su sabiduría ha sido devorada (Sal 106,27); y: Malditos los que se apartan de tus mandatos (Sal 118,21). Ven y conocen, saben y hacen el mal, y a sabiendas pierden sus almas.
Miren, ciegos, engañados por sus enemigos, la carne, el mundo y el diablo, que al cuerpo le es dulce pecar y amargo servir a Dios; pues todos los vicios y pecados salen y proceden del corazón del hombre, como dice el Señor en el Evangelio (cf. Mc 7,21.23; Mt 15,18-19). Y nada tienen en este mundo ni en el futuro. Piensan poseer por mucho tiempo las vanidades de este mundo, pero están engaña- dos, porque vendrán el día y la hora que no piensan, que desconocen e ignoran (cf. Mt 24,44; 25,13): enferma el cuerpo, se acerca la muerte, y se muere así con muerte amarga (1Sam 15,32). Y dondequiera, cuandoquiera y comoquiera que muere el hombre en pecado mortal, sin penitencia y sin haberlo reparado, si pudiendo hacerlo no lo hace, el diablo arrebata el alma de su cuerpo con tanta angustia y tribulación como nadie las puede imaginar, sino el que las padece.
Y todos los talentos y el poder, y la ciencia y la sabiduría (cf. 2Crón 1,12) que creían tener, les serán arrebatados (cf. Lc 8,18: Mc 4,25). Y los dejan a los parientes y amigos; y éstos toman y reparten su hacienda, y dicen luego: «¡Maldita sea su alma, pues pudo dejarnos más y haber ganado más de lo que ganó!» El cuerpo se lo comen los gusanos; y así pierden el cuerpo y el alma en este mundo caduco, e irán al infierno, donde serán atormentados sin fin (cf. Lc 16,24).
A todos aquellos a quienes llegue estas letras, les rogamos, por la caridad que es Dios (cf. 1Jn 4,8.16), que acojan benignamente con amor divino las sobredichas fragantes palabras de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Y los que no saben leer, háganselas leer con frecuencia; y ténganlas consigo con obras santas hasta el fin, porque son espíritu y vida (Jn 6,63). Y los que no hagan esto tendrán que dar cuenta en el día del juicio (cf. Mt 12,36), ante el tribunal de nuestro Señor Jesucristo (cf. Rom 14,10).
COMENTARIO
En segundo lugar, la persona que rechaza esta gracia carece de sabiduría y de luz, pierde la perspectiva de luchar por la alegría perfecta y se encuentra esclavizada y sofocada por las influencias demoníacas de la vida. Por lo tanto, no hay felicidad en este mundo ni en el próximo. Las palabras de Francisco son duras, directas e intransigentes, pero el mensaje central es válido y siempre verdadero.
