Getting to Know the OFS Ritual (Part 2)
Many fraternities and individuals have purchased, or are planning to purchase, the newly updated Ritual of the Secular Franciscan Order. In addition to using it for our important rites and milestones, becoming familiar with the contents of the ritual can be an important part of our ongoing formation. (The Spanish version is found online—see below—and the Korean version is available from the National Fraternity of Korea. For those portions of the USA ritual not found in the International version, we have translated the FOCUS sections for fraternity discussion.)
What is in the Ritual? (Refers to the updated Ritual published in 2024)
· Part I Rites for Entering the Secular Franciscan Order: Ceremony of Welcoming (Does not appear in the International Ritual); Rite of Admission; Rite of Permanent Commitment; Rite of Temporary Commitment; Ceremony on the Anniversary of Profession.
· Part II Prayer for Fraternity Meetings: Prayers for Fraternity Meetings and Gatherings; Prayer for the Regular Meeting of the Council; Celebration of the Fraternity’s Chapter of Elections; The Establishment of a New Fraternity; Prayer for the Fraternal or Pastoral Visit

Using the Ritual for ongoing formation (Example points for focus and discussion.)
· Entering the Order: During the fraternity gathering (or for personal meditation), read the Welcoming and Rite of Admission. Focus on the meaning for you of the words we say when we are committing ourselves to follow Jesus in the footsteps of St. Francis or preparing to do so.
The Ceremony of Welcoming: FOCUS: particularly on the words of welcome spoken by the Minister-–
“I warmly welcome you, and I note your desire to inquire into the Secular Franciscan way of life. Be assured that in your discernment you will have the support and the encouragement of our prayer, our formation and our example. And always keep in mind the words of St. Francis of Assisi to Brother Leo: ‘In whatever way you think will best please our Lord God and follow in his footsteps and in poverty, take that way with the Lord God’s blessing.’”
The Rite of Admission: (Read the background on the Rite and read the entire Rite.)
FOCUS: Candidates: “We here present ask to enter this fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order, so that we may live more intensely and faithfully the grace and dedication of our Baptism by following Jesus Christaccording to the teachings and example of St. Francis of Assisi. In this way we intend to be of service to all through our secular state of life for the glory of God and to fulfill his plan of love on behalf of all people.”
FOCUS: “ The rule and life of the Secular Franciscans is this: to observe the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, who made Christ the inspiration and the center of his life withGod and with people.”

· Ingreso en la Orden: Durante el encuentro de fraternidad (o para la meditación personal), lea La Ceremonia de bienvenida y el Rito de Admisión. Céntrese en el significado que tienen para usted las palabras que pronunciamos cuando nos comprometemos a seguir a Jesús tras los pasos de San Francisco o cuando nos preparamos para hacerlo.
