Getting to Know the OFS Ritual (Part 1)
At the beginning of May, Formation Friday focused on the Rites of Admission and Profession. Last week we detailed the importance of ongoing formation in the lives of Secular Franciscans. Many fraternities and individuals have purchased, or are planning to purchase, the newly updated Ritual of the Secular Franciscan Order. In addition to knowing our important rites and milestones, becoming familiar in general with the purpose of a ritual for an Order of the Church and delving into the contents of our own Ritual should be an important part of our ongoing formation.
Background
· Prior to 1955, the only Ritual for the Secular Franciscan Order was contained in the Tertiary’s Companion.
· Bits of a Third Order Ritual as contained in a Latin document of the Friars Minor had been collated by Fr. Philip Marquard and published by Franciscan Herald Press with the title, The Fraternity Book
· Then, in 1955, Fr. Mark Hegener, OFM, compiled and published The Ritual for Public Functions, Franciscan Third Order
· In 1966 [in light of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican II] the Commissaries General of the Franciscan Order urged the entire Franciscan world to engage in an overhaul of the rule, constitutions, and ritual of the Third Order, stating specifically: “That the Ceremonial (the Ritual) was to, be completely revised in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.”
· This resulted in the New Ritual for Public Functions, compiled by Benet A. Fonck, O.F.M., and his associates.
· In 1978, the revised Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order was approved by Pope Paul VI on June 24 and promulgated by the four Franciscan Ministers General on October 4. Immediately work began on updating the Ritual to conform to the new Rule.
· The Latin text of the “new Ritual” was approved by the Sacred Congregation for Sacraments and Divine Worship in 1984, and then the English edition was approved by the Sacred Congregation in 1985.
· A revised edition of the CIOFS Constitutions and Ritual appeared in 2000.
· In 2022-23 our publishers indicated that the Ritual would soon go “out of print,” and OFS USA was given the copyright. At that time it was decided that a revised edition was in order. It was printed in 2024, and many of us now have that copy in our fraternity and personal libraries. (The 2024 edition is only available in English at this time. However, the ritual itself is also available in Spanish, Italian, and French on the CIOFS website. https://ciofs.info/library/official-documents/ ) The official translation of the Ritual in Korean is available from the National Fraternity of Korea.
Why is it important for us to have a Ritual?
For the Secular Franciscan Order, a written ritual book is an indispensable anchor that secures our spiritual identity because we are scattered all around the secular world. Because we do not share a monastery but meet only periodically in local fraternities, the written text provides the global uniformity and institutional structure needed to remain one cohesive, international Order. It transforms our periodic gatherings into sacred spaces by standardizing liturgical routines, governing fraternity elections, and providing councils with the objective authority to lead.
Most crucially, the written ritual preserves the profound theological gravity of our lifelong canonical commitment. It codifies the precise, legally recognized rites for the stages of formation—from the Rite of Admission to solemn Profession—ensuring that our promises to live the Franciscan gospel life are executed with validity and dignity. By safeguarding the original spirit of St. Francis against “generational drift,” the written ritual helps us as ordinary Catholics to become part of a disciplined, universally aligned spiritual family.

Muchos individuales y fraternidades han adquirido, o tienen previsto adquirir, el Ritual de la Orden Franciscana Seglar, recientemente actualizado. Además de conocer nuestros ritos e hitos importantes, familiarizarnos en general con el propósito de un ritual para una Orden de la Iglesia y profundizar en los contenidos de nuestro propio Ritual debería ser una parte importante de nuestra formación permanente.
Antecedentes
· Antes de 1955, el único ritual de la Orden Franciscana Seglar se encontraba recogido en el Tertiary’s Companion.
