Secular Franciscans and the Eucharist – Please share with your local fraternity.
In anticipation of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) on June 19th (in some dioceses June 22), we examine again our devotion to the Eucharist as followers of St. Francis.
St. Francis was devoted to the Eucharist. In the first Admonition, he says. “This is my Body and the Blood of my new covenant [which will be shed for many] ;{snippet Mk 14:22} 11 and Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life .{snippet Mk 14:24} 12 It is the Spirit of the Lord,{snippet Jn 6:55} therefore, That lives in Its faithful, That receives the Body and Blood of the Lord. 13 All others who do not share in this same Spirit and presume to receive Him eat and drink judgment on themselves .{snippet 1 Cor 11:29}”(The Admonitions: FA:ED, vol. 1, p. 129)
As we follow in the footsteps of our Seraphic Father, we, too, are devoted to the most precious Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. Let’s take a look at our Rule and Constitutions.
Rule Article 8: … “Let them participate in the sacramental life of the Church, above all the Eucharist….”
General Constitutions Article 14.2: (Refers to Art. 8 of the Rule) “The Eucharist is the center of the life of the Church. Christ unites us to himself and to one another as a single body in it. Therefore, the Eucharist should be the center of the life of the fraternity. The brothers and sisters should participate in the Eucharist as frequently as possible, being mindful of the respect and love shown by Francis, who, in the Eucharist, lived all the mysteries of the life of Christ.”
“The Holy Spirit builds up, animates, and sanctifies the Church. He prepares us to go out and bring others to Christ. He opens our minds to understand Christ’s death and Resurrection. He makes present for us the mystery of Christ, especially in the Eucharist, and brings us to communion with God that we may bear much fruit. (Cf. CCC
– no. 737) United States Catholic Catechism for Adults – USCCB – Page 109
GC Article 53.2 & 4 (Refers to Articles 6 & 8 of the Rule) 2.”The fraternity should come together periodically, also as a Church community to celebrate the Eucharist in a climate which strengthens the fraternal bond and characterizes the identity of the Franciscan family. Where, for whatever reason, this particular celebration may not be possible, they should participate in the celebration of the larger Church community.”
N.B. “The Eucharist, celebrated with parish members, draws us to the Church. It keeps us in touch with the local
parish and diocesan community. The fraternity may periodically celebrate Eucharist at their fraternity gatherings.
This celebration is recommended for special occasions – e.g. Professions, jubilees of profession, a memorial Eucharist for the deceased of the SFO or other important occasions.” Cf. Benedict XVI’s quote from Sacramentum

En anticipación de la solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo (Corpus Christi) el 19 de junio (en algunas diócesis el 22 de junio), examinamos nuevamente nuestra devoción a la Eucaristía como seguidores de San Francisco.
San Francisco era devoto de la Eucaristía. Mientras seguimos los pasos de nuestro Seráfico Padre, nosotros también somos devotos del Cuerpo y la Sangre más preciados de nuestro Señor Jesús en la Eucaristía. Echemos un vistazo a nuestra Regla y Constituciones.

FORMATION FRIDAY – The Fruits of the Spirit emplemplified in our RULE – June 6, 2025

The Fruits of the Spirit exemplified in our RuleWhen we are baptized, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts are strengthened at our Confirmation. When we are professed as Secular Franciscans, we further strengthen our Baptismal Promises. As a result of the gifts of the Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord), we are able to demonstrate the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, modesty, self-restraint, and chastity.) By living our rule, we hope to exemplify these fruits in everything we do in our daily lives.
Our Rule
— Spells out the way the Spirit wishes us to do God’s will
— Tells us how God desires us to live
— Faithfulness to the Rule and Constitutions help us to build up God’s Kingdom (as we are called to do through our Baptism).
For your consideration—the Fruits of the Spirit and our Rule
First of all—Articles 4, 14 and 19 ask us to be open to the action of the Holy Spirit. Then:
Love: Articles 5, 13, and 18
+We are asked to encounter the living person of Christ in one another and to be mindful that all creatures bear the “imprint of the Most High.”Joy: Articles 13 and 19
+We are reminded that a sense of community makes us joyful and that we are “Messengers of perfect joy in every circumstance…”Peace: Articles 17 and 19
+We are reminded that we are “bearers of peace” and that we should “cultivate peace.”Patience: Articles 7 and 10
+We seek conversion each day (metanoia) as we place ourselves in the hands of the Father.Kindness: Articles 13 and 14

Los frutos del Espíritu ejemplificados en nuestra ReglaCuando somos bautizados recibimos los dones del Espíritu Santo. Estos dones se fortalecen en nuestra Confirmación. Cuando profesamos como franciscanos seglares, fortalecemos aún más nuestras promesas bautismales. Como resultado de los dones del Espíritu (sabiduría, entendimiento, consejo, fortaleza, conocimiento, piedad y temor del Señor), podemos demostrar los frutos del Espíritu (amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, bondad, bondad, longanimidad, apacibilidad, fe, modestia, dominio propio y castidad.) Al vivir nuestra regla, esperamos ejemplificar estos frutos en todo lo que hacemos en nuestra vida diaria.
Nuestra Regla:

Gifts of the Holy Spirit – Please share with your local fraternity
In preparation for Pentecost, we meditate on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit found in the book of the Prophet Isaiah 11:1–2. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us:
(CCC 1830) The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
(CCC 1831) The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. They belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David.109 They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations.
We receive these gifts at our Baptism, and they are strengthened at Confirmation. For those of us who are professed Franciscans, our baptismal commitment and consecration to God is renewed at profession. Therefore, these gifts are strengthened in us for a third time.
Franciscan spirituality emphasizes humility, simplicity, and a deep connection to and relationship with God and our brothers and sisters. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit play a significant role in shaping our way of life. Here is how they relate to our daily lives:
+ Wisdom: Guides Franciscans in seeing God’s presence in all creation, fostering a spirit of gratitude and reverence.
+ Understanding: Helps us to comprehend the depth of God’s love, leading to a life of compassion and service.
+ Counsel: Directs us in making moral and ethical decisions, especially in serving the poor and marginalized.
+ Fortitude: Strengthens us to endure hardships with joy, much like St. Francis himself.
+ Knowledge: Enables us to see the world through God’s eyes, recognizing the relationship and connections we have with one another and with all of creation.
+ Piety: Helps us to have a deep devotion to God, expressed through prayer and acts of kindness.
+ Fear of the Lord: Instills in us a sense of awe and humility, reminding us to trust in God’s providence.For discussion in fraternity or to answer in your journal:
+ Which gifts speak most to your heart? How do you exemplify them?
+ How do these gifts help us as Catholics and as Franciscans?
+ Thinking about St. Francis himself, how do these gifts shine forth in him and in his writings?

About the “Little Flowers:”
· “The popularity of these preachers [the friars] and the curiosity of the people may well have inspired what quickly became known as The Little Flowers of Saint Francis.”

¿Qué son las florecillas de San Francisco?
Pero ¿qué son las florecillas de San Francesco? Los orígenes del original del siglo XIV están envueltos en misterio. What is at the CORE of Franciscan life and spirituality? Take a look at what was important to St. Francis. There you will find a good roadmap. The words and ideas below are exemplified by our Seraphic Father. Have you noticed how often they are repeated in initial and ongoing formation? (Not necessarily in order of importance.)
· The INCARNATION– the CRIB–we think of the humility of God, of His self-emptying. Francis was in awe of the Incarnation. Meditate on the story of Francis creating the first Nativity scene at Greccio.
· The CROSS – is the sign of God’s love made concrete. What do we see/experience when we GAZE on the cross? Meditate on Francis’s experiences with the Cross of Christ.
· The EUCHARIST- CHALICE/CIBORIUM –– “O sublime humility! O humble sublimity! The Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God, so humbles Himself that for our salvation He hides Himself
under an ordinary piece of bread!” (St. Francis-Letter to the Entire Order)· TRINITY Franciscan life focuses on the Trinity. Francis saw that God is so generous that his love not only flows among the persons of the Trinity, it overflows to us. And we participate in the life of the Trinity.
· CONTEMPLATION – We spend time with Jesus, and we LISTEN; we desire not only to imitate him. Our goal is to be TRANSFORMED so that we are like him from the inside out.
· CONVERSION/METANOIA – We are people of penance-This means that we strive for daily spiritual improvements and changes that will bring us closer to Christ. “Let us begin, for up to now, we have done little…” (St. Francis quoted in The Life of Blessed Francis: FA:ED, vol. 2, p. 640 by St. Bonaventure)
· CREATION/CREATURES – God is absolute LOVE, BEING AND CREATIVITY. Francis saw all creation as being marked with the imprint of the Father. Creation is God’s great gift and is dependent on Him to exist.
· RELATIONSHIP– Francis saw the relationship of the Father and the Son through the love of the Holy Spirit. We are in relationship with God, our brothers and sisters and with all of creation – UNIVERSAL KINSHIP.
· FRATERNITY springs from the relationship we have with God, our brothers and sisters and all creation. “The Lord gave me some brothers…” (St. Francis)
· CHARISM – Like St. Francis, we strive to make Christ present in the world by living the Gospel in HUMILITY and SIMPLICITY. As Secular Franciscans, we do this while living in the world. “The Rule and life of the Secular Franciscans is this…” (OFS Rule: Article 4)
· SCRIPTURE – In order to live the Gospel, we need to make it part of our lives through reading, meditation and study. “…going from Gospel to life and life to the Gospel.” (OFS Rule: Article 4)
· TRANSFORMATION – We use the gifts God has given us to become more Christlike. The Divine Spark never changes. We cooperate with the grace given us, and we become conformed to Christ.
· PRAYER – none of this is possible without prayer. We pray together, we pray alone, we pray with our voices, we pray silently and without words. (Our prayer is liturgical, personal and communal)

La CRUZ – es el signo del amor de Dios hecho concreto. ¿Qué vemos / experimentamos cuando CONTEMPLAMOS la cruz? Medite sobre las experiencias de Francisco con la Cruz de Cristo.
La EUCARISTÍA- CÁLIZ / CIBORIO –– “¡Oh sublime humildad! ¡Oh humilde sublimidad! El Señor del universo, Dios y el Hijo de Dios, se humilla tanto que para nuestra salvación se esconde bajo un pan ordinario! ” (Carta de San Francisco a toda la Orden)
LA TRINIDAD – La vida franciscana se centra en la Trinidad. Francisco vio que Dios es tan generoso que su amor no solo fluye entre las personas de la Trinidad, sino que nos desborda. Y participamos de la vida de la Trinidad.
LA CONTEMPLACIÓN – Pasamos tiempo con Jesús y ESCUCHAMOS; deseamos no solo imitarlo. Nuestro objetivo es ser TRANSFORMADOS para que seamos como él de adentro hacia afuera.
LA CONVERSIÓN / METANOIA – Somos personas de penitencia. Esto significa que nos esforzamos por lograr mejoras y cambios espirituales diarios que nos acerquen más a Cristo. “Comencemos, porque hasta ahora poco hemos hecho…” (San Francisco citado en La vida del beato Francisco: FA: ED, vol. 2, p. 640 de San Buenaventura)
CREACIÓN / CRIATURAS – Dios es AMOR, EXISTENCIA Y CREATIVIDAD absolutos. Francisco vio toda la creación marcada con la huella del Padre. La creación es el gran regalo de Dios y depende de Él para existir.
RELACIÓN– Francisco vio la relación del Padre y el Hijo a través del amor del Espíritu Santo. Estamos en relación con Dios, nuestros hermanos y hermanas y con toda la creación: PARENTESCO UNIVERSAL.
La FRATERNIDAD surge de la relación que tenemos con Dios, nuestros hermanos y hermanas y toda la creación. “El Señor me dio unos hermanos…” (San Francisco)
CARISMA – Como San Francisco, nos esforzamos por hacer a Cristo presente en el mundo viviendo el Evangelio en HUMILDAD y SIMPLICIDAD. Como Franciscanos Seglares, hacemos esto mientras vivimos en el mundo. “La Regla y la vida de los Franciscanos Seglares es esta …” (Regla OFS: Artículo 4)
La ESCRITURA – Para vivir el Evangelio, debemos hacerlo parte de nuestras vidas a través de la lectura, la meditación y el estudio. “… Pasando del Evangelio a la vida y de la vida al Evangelio”. (Regla OFS: artículo 4)
La TRANSFORMACIÓN: usamos los dones que Dios nos ha dado para ser más semejantes a Cristo. La Chispa Divina nunca cambia. Cooperamos con la gracia que se nos ha dado y nos conformamos a Cristo.
La ORACIÓN: Nada de esto es posible sin la oración. Rezamos juntos, rezamos solos, rezamos con nuestra voz, rezamos en silencio y sin palabras. (Nuestra oración es litúrgica, personal y comunitaria)
