Formation Friday Dec 27, 2019

Did you know that:

–According to our Rule and Constitutions, we should pray some form of liturgical prayer each day?

Here are the references from the Essential Documents of the Secular Franciscan Order-

Rule:

Article 8. As Jesus was the true worshipper of the Father, so let prayer and contemplation be the soul of all they are and do. Let them participate in the sacramental life of the Church, above all the Eucharist. Let them join in liturgical prayer in one of the forms proposed by the Church, reliving the mysteries of the life of Christ.

This is further explained in the General Constitutions:

Article 4. The brothers and sisters, as well as the fraternities, should adhere to the indications of the Ritual with respect to the different forms of participating in the liturgical prayer of the Church, giving priority to the celebration of the Liturgy
of the Hours.

Here is the reference from the Ritual (See Essential Documents of the Secular Franciscan Order, Appendix Part III, pp. 39-40):

Part Three
Liturgical Prayer
For the Members of the Secular Franciscan Order

26. According to the OFS Rule (art. 8), the members of the Secular Franciscan Order are to join in liturgical prayer in one of the forms proposed by the Church, reliving the mysteries of Christ.

27. These prayers may be:

a. Morning and evening prayer from The Liturgy of the Hours, either in common or in private. These celebrations are to be preferred at the fraternity meeting.

b. A shortened form of The Liturgy of the Hours according to forms adapted to the local Churches.

c. The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

d. The Office of the Passion written by St. Francis of Assisi

e. The office of the twelve Our Fathers in one of its many versions that have been enriched with short biblical readings and also adapted to the structure of The Liturgy of the Hours, especially since this form of prayer still thrives in many parts of the world and is a useful way of praying in everyday circumstances.

+Are you willing to say “YES” even when you don’t understand the mystery of the call?
+How about when the call comes from someone you don’t like?
+Can you say “YES” when you will not receive recognition or thanks?

Rule, Constitutions, Statutes

The RULE (Regula)

Literally means the standard by which something can be tested

It establishes the spiritual foundation and identity of the community

It is the norm by which all other documents of the Order are measured

The Rule of an Order or institute is approved ONLY by the Holy See

The CONSTITUTIONS determine

Governance

Legislation

Administrative processes

They spell out HOW we are to live the Rule

Makes the spirit of the Rule concrete, real and livable

Approved by the Holy See

The STATUTES

Are linked to and expand upon the Constitutions

Supplementary collection of norms

Guide specific areas of the life of the community

Statutes are for specific countries

+The articles of the Rule spell out our way of life

+No article can be neglected

+Profession commits us to the whole Rule, not just parts of it

+Our vocation requires us to be faithful to the entire Rule.

Importance of Scripture to Secular Franciscans

“Secular Franciscans should devote themselves especially to careful reading of the gospel, going from gospel to life and life to the gospel.”       Rule Article 4

+Studying the Bible is not prayer
+Using the Bible to pray is different
+We listen to God with open mind and heart
+God speaks to us
+What is He calling us to be or do?
+Lectio Divina or Franciscan Lectio are good ways to pray the Scriptures

For Discussion
–How would you describe meditation?
–What word best describes prayer?
–What is the best time for you to pray?
–Why is the Bible important for the prayer life of a Secular Franciscan?

Franciscan Spirituality

+Intense Eucharistic life (contemplation of God’s kénosis)1

+Poverty (the consequence of Kénosis)

+Minority-Humility (consequence of Kénosis)

+Simplicity 2

+Obedience (conform to the eternal project of the Father) 3

+Chastity 4

+Fraternity as the specific characterizing element—to be lived with special intensity. 5

+Franciscan evangelical radicality 6

1-Kénosis: Self – emptying

2-Simplicity—all can and must be referred to the single simple act of God’s love: His complete donation of Self. God is simple, we render him complicated. We should avoid all that makes Him complicated.

3-Obedience: Essential is obedience to the Church. In it Francis recognizes the presence of Christ’s Spirit in its fullness. Francis is rooted in the belief that there is no Church without the Eucharist and there is no Eucharist without those who consecrate the Body and Blood of Christ.

4-Chastity—God donates himself completely—We are made able to love everybody—more and better

5-Fraternity is the specific characterizing element of Franciscanism. This is to be lived with special intensity.

6-Evangelical Radicality—Francis followed the total Christ in simplicity and without interpretation
