FORMATION FRIDAY – JAN 8, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters, 

The New Year and the time we generally resolve to do better in some areas.  This year, as we strive to be better Secular Franciscans, let’s start with our prayer life.  One of the benefits of doing this is that this step will help improve your inner peace.  Peace is always important, but today it is critical.  

Today’s lesson discusses;

  • St Bonaventure’s spiritual direction to the Poor Clare nuns – way of ‘descent’.
  • A Prayer Journal is a beneficial tool to help you reflect as you contemplate your life.

The New Year is also a great time to make a General Confession.  This is not the monthly regular confession, it is a review of your life and your major sins.  This usually necessitates an appointment (retired priests usually have time to do this confession which takes an hour or more).    Peace, Dona

Taking Stock 2021 #2 Our Lives of Prayer as Secular Franciscans

“As Minister General of a large Order, St. Bonaventure provided, among other things, spiritual direction for those seeking God. In a letter to Poor Clare nuns, he offered directives as to how we might enter into prayer by way of ‘descent.’

“The steps are summarized as follows:

·        Return to yourself; Enter into your heart;

·        Ponder what you were, are, should have been, called to be;

·        What you are by nature;

·        What you are through sin;

·        What you should have been through effort;

·        What you can still be through grace;

·        Meditate in your heart;

·        Let your spirit brood. (Are you resentful, angry, jealous?);

·        Plow this field, work on yourself;

·        Strive for freedom within, the freedom that leads to relationship with God, realizing that God will never force us to love him;

·        Lack of self-knowledge and failure to appreciate one’s own worth make for faulty judgment in all other matters;

·        If you are not able to understand (and accept) your own self, you will not be able to understand (or accept) what is beyond you.”

Formation Friday – January 1, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,  

Today our lesson is about Strengthening our Fraternity Life.  This email contains resources to use for formation for the coming year.  There are several attachments to this email, including two videos. In one of the two attached videos, Diane invites us to virtually attend one of her fraternity meetings.  That is a pretty great opportunity to see her in action!  

It is pretty amazing to see the amount of hard work the National Formation Commission devotes to the Order.   All of you on formation teams should consider incorporating some of these resources into your fraternity’s formation program.  All of the resources support our National theme which is Fraternity Life-Living Fraternal Communion.   Wishing you a Holy New Year as we pray to grow closer to God.  Peace, Dona

Christmas blessings!
 

St.
Francis’s devotion to and awe of the Incarnation and the humility of God is the
root to which Franciscans return as we pray. Especially at this time of year,
as we rejoice and give thanks for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, let’s
give some thought to why our belief in the Incarnation is crucial as Catholics
and as Franciscans.

Why did
the Word become flesh, why the Incarnation?

The
Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us: The Word became flesh for us in
order to save us by reconciling us with God; the Word became flesh so we might
know God’s love: the Word became flesh to be our model of holiness; the Word
became flesh to make us “partakers of the divine nature” (See Catechism
of the Catholic Church 457-460)

Many of these same points were made by the great Franciscan
theologian, Bl. John Duns Scotus, who lived in the 12-13th
centuries. His ideas have become prominent in Franciscan theology. [Duns
Scotus]
“…argued that God’s supreme work, the Incarnation, had to be first
and foremost in God’s mind. It could not be dependent on or occasioned by any
action of humans, especially sin…Duns Scotus emphasized divine love. God is
love and created all life in order to communicate to creatures the fullness of
divine love. The Incarnate Word is the foundation of the creative plan of God,
the very reason for the existence of all creation.”

La devoción y el asombro de San Francisco por la
Encarnación y la humildad de Dios es la raíz a la que los franciscanos regresan

y damos gracias por el nacimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, pensemos un poco
en por qué nuestra fe en la Encarnación es crucial como católicos y
franciscanos.

¿Por qué el Verbo se hizo carne, por qué la
Encarnación?

El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica nos enseña: El
Verbo se hizo carne para nosotros para salvarnos reconciliándonos con Dios; el
Verbo se hizo carne para que pudiéramos conocer el amor de Dios: el Verbo se
hizo carne para ser nuestro modelo de santidad; el Verbo se hizo carne para

Formation Friday – O Antiphons and the Praises of God – December 18, 2020

Did you ever notice the relationship between the Praises of God and the O Antiphons? Now might be a good time to take a look.

“Leo of Assisi, who was with Francis on LaVerna in the Fall of 1224, wrote in red ink on one side of this piece of parchment: ‘Two years before his death, the blessed Francis spent forty days on Mount LaVerna from the Feast of the Assumption of the holy Virgin Mary until the September Feast of Saint Michael, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and the blessed Michael the Archangel. And the Lord’s hand was upon him. After the vision and message of the Seraph and the impression of Christ’s stigmata upon his body, he composed these praises written on the other side of this page and wrote them in his own hand, thanking God for the kindness bestowed on him.’”

About the O Antiphons

“The Roman Church has been singing the “O” Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. [Cap. IV: Que nadie se apropie la prelacía]

1No he venido a ser servido, sino a servir, dice el Señor (cf. Mt 20,28). 2Aquellos que han sido constituidos sobre los otros, gloríense de esa prelacía tanto, cuanto si hubiesen sido destinados al oficio de lavar los pies a los hermanos. 3Y cuanto más se turban por la pérdida de la prelacía que por la pérdida del oficio de lavar los pies, tanto más acumulan en la bolsa para peligro de su alma (cf. Jn 12,6).

[Cap. VI: De la imitación del Señor]

1Consideremos todos los hermanos al buen pastor, que por salvar a sus ovejas sufrió la pasión de la cruz. 2Las ovejas del Señor le siguieron en la tribulación y la persecución, en la vergüenza y el hambre, en la enfermedad y la tentación, y en las demás cosas; y por esto recibieron del Señor la vida sempiterna. 3De donde es una gran vergüenza para nosotros, siervos de Dios, que los santos hicieron las obras y nosotros, recitándolas, queremos recibir gloria y honor.

[Cap. IX: Del amor]

1Dice el Señor: Amad a vuestros enemigos, [haced el bien a los que os odian, y orad por los que os persiguen y calumnian] (Mt 5,44). 2En efecto, ama de verdad a su enemigo aquel que no se duele de la injuria que le hace, 3sino que, por amor de Dios, se consume por el pecado del alma de su enemigo. 4Y muéstrele su amor con obras.
